Overall verdict

"Get behind the wheel of the Bentley Continental GT and the overwhelming impression is of luxury. From its thick wood trims to its knurled metals and soft leathers, there are few cars that feel as special as the Bentley inside."

Bentley Continental Driving

It may not be a huge departure from its predecessor in terms of styling, but this Bentley Continental GT is designed to have a more ‘'muscular and sculpted' appearance according to Bentley, with the aim of giving it a more aggressive appearance.

Many of the styling cues from the outgoing Continental GTC have continued and it's definitely an evolution of its predecessor. There are some key differences like the higher waistline and new jewel-like headlights with neat LED daytime running lights that surround the main headlight.

It may not be a big departure in terms of styling, but the GT is a car that has the ability to get attention wherever you go. Inside you get to appreciate the handcrafted quality that makes a Bentley such a special car. There are almost endless choices and combinations of finish and materials so you’ll be hard pressed to find two Bentley’s the same.

While other manufacturers may talk about luxury and sophstication, the Bentley is the real deal. There's an understated class running through everything and while this is far from being anything other than an expensive car, you can certainly see the uncompromising focus on quality that Bentley people talk about.

It uses the same twin-turbo W12 engine as the standard GT but power has been boosted even further so it now delivers 625PS – up from 575PS thanks to a new engine management system. Along with the extra power comes a 100Nm increase in torque giving a hefty 800Nm.

Along with a 205mph top speed the GT Speed will accelerate from 0-60mph in just 4.0 seconds with 0-100mph taking just 9.0 seconds. Not that the GT Speed is a car that you race away from a standstill in. What impresses more is the sheer ease in which it rapidly gains speed. Make no bones about it, this car is amazingly quick and it certainly feels it. But there's no hustle and bustle, instead the Bentley just effortlessly builds speed.

It is a truly special car. There’s an aura that surrounds the Bentley badge which makes it one of the most desirable luxury cars on the market. Yes it’s expensive to maintain - this isn’t a car you buy if you want low running costs - but it will reward you with luxurious and effortless travel.

Is the Bentley Continental GT right for you?

Few cars have as much prestige as a Bentley. While prices are coming down, it’s still a car to impress people and thanks to the hand-crafted interior, it oozes class. If you want the ultimate in luxury touring, this is it.

What’s the best Bentley Continental GT model/engine to choose?

The W12 may take all the headlines and indeed, the GT Speed model is immense, but for everyday usability, the V8 sounds nicer, is just as quick as the standard W12 and costs less to run.

What other cars are similar to the Bentley Continental?

There are lots of pretenders to the Continental GT’s crown. The Mercedes S-Class Coupe is a luxurious tour de force that's technically better than the Bentley, but can't match its luxurious feel. Neither can the Aston Martin DB11, but it should be your choice if you're looking for a more engaging take on the GT car recipe.

Comfort and design

"The tightrope the Continental GT walks so well is that it successfully blends traditional Bentley design elements with modern materials including lacquered piano black trim, chrome and aluminium, soft leather, plus deep luxurious carpet."

Bentley Continental Interior

Look out for cars with the Mulliner Driving specification which features drilled alloy pedals, diamond-quilted trim and contrast stitching.

Quality and finish

Inside the cabin, the handcrafted interior is as luxurious as any production car gets. There are the traditional features, like metal pull switches for the vents along with acres of wood and leather. It’s all put together in a way which makes it feel more special than a Mercedes-Benz or even an Aston Martin.

Infotainment

If there’s one area where the Bentley Continental GT isn’t as hot, it’s in terms of infotainment. It uses a Volkswagen-sourced system but it was already dated when this Continental GT was launched in 2010.

Space and practicality

While it’s a coupe, the Bentley is nonetheless a big car. So it’s actually usefully practical with a big boot and room for two passengers in the back so long as they're not tall, although anyone back there will feel a little hemmed in.

Handling and ride quality

"The Bentley Continental is never anything less than a heavy, grand tourer. It’s certainly not a nimble car, but the V8 S has a 10mm lower ride height along with an uprated chassis, increased spring rates and revised damping. The steering is sharper and more responsive while a stiffer rear anti-roll bar improves body control and turn-in."

Bentley Continental Driving Back

The steering is precise and this GT feels more agile and more responsive than ever. It is a true performance car with an uncanny ability to disguise its significant weight. There are few cars that can reach three-figure speeds with such ease and refinement.

Engines and gearboxes

The V8 is the best model in the range and the S is the one to go for. It tunes the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 up to 528PS – up from 507PS – meaning there is 20Nm more torque available, reducing the car's 0-62mph time three tenths to 4.5 seconds.

All of these may seem like a good deal of fuss for what seems like incremental improvements but it all adds up to a Continental that is noticeably more energetic and exciting than the  standard V8 model. This is particularly apparent when the car is switched into the Sport setting. Throttle response is enhanced and the eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox shifts more quickly yet hangs on to the gears – and the splendid exhaust noise – for that little bit longer.

Refinement and noise levels

Refinement is incredible and it's often easy to think you're cruising gently along only to find that you are in fact approaching three figures on the speedo. This is what makes the GT a unique car – it's most definitely a grand tourer but with supercar levels of performance and speed. And it manages it all with amazing stability and surefootedness.

Safety equipment

The Continental GT was never crash tested by Euro NCAP - no Bentley has. But given that it shares much with Volkswagen Group models and weighs the best part of two tonnes, it’s fairly accurate to say it’s a safe car.

MPG fuel costs

"A lot is the answer. Don’t buy a Bentley if you’re worried about how much it costs to fill it up as you’ll be doing it very often."

Bentley Continental Exterior Front

A W12 will do around 15mpg if you’re lucky and while the V8 is better on fuel, you’re still only looking at low 20s for mpg.

Insurance groups and costs

Did you expect anything less? Yes, there’s no surprise that all models sit in the top group 50 for insurance.

VED

The majority of Continental GT models fall under the old VED system and unsurprisingly all are in the highest band for tax. Who would have guessed that. It means annual road tax of close to £600.

Models registered after April 2017 drop to a flat rate of £150 a year, so newer cars are worth seeking out. Just be aware that all Continental GT models have a list price of more than £40,000 so will incur the extra £325 a year showroom tax for five years from the second time it’s taxed.

How much should you be paying?

"The Continental GT is not a car you want to buy on the cheap and don’t be fooled into thinking every Bentley out there will be well cared for."

Bentley Continental Wheel

Sadly that’s not the case. You’ll need at least £40,000 to £45,000 for early models.

Trim levels and standard equipment

There are no real trim levels as such. Every Bentley is unique to its first owner who is able to personalise it as they wish. This does mean that when you’re buying used, you may have to put up with someone else’s tastes.

There are however some visual differences, albeit subtle. V8S models get open-spoke 20-inch wheels,  a unique front splitter, side sills and a rear diffuser in Beluga piano black plus shiny figure of eight exhaust pipes.
