Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV

Mercedes has previewed the new Mercedes-Benz EQS electric SUV by revealing the hyper-luxurious Maybach model.

While the Maybach will compete with cars like the Rolls Royce Cullinan and Bentley Bentayga, the regular Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV will be an electric rival for cars like the new Range Rover and BMW X7.

The Maybach model pictured will likely cost £200,000, however the regular electric Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV will have a price of closer to £100,000 – it will do without the Maybach’s uber-luxurious interior and outrageous power, yet it’ll still be posh and quick. The EQS SUV will compete with cars like the BMW X7 and the Range Rover and when it is launched in spring 2022.

2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS electric SUV specs

The Mercedes-Benz EQS electric SUV will look very similar to the Maybach model pictured, but without the bling. Out goes the in-your-face chrome grille, huge wheels and two-tone paint job and in comes a subtler finish that’ll help your £150,000 SUV blend into the crowd... Relatively speaking at least.

You’ll find the interior has also been toned down. Expect the soft leather of the Maybach model to be swapped for more run-of-the-mill hide and leather-look vinyl. It’ll still be very posh – just not £200,000 posh.

What won’t change is the infotainment system. Both the EQE and EQS saloons get Mercedes’ Hyperscreen – what appears to be one huge screen that stretches the length of the dashboard is actually made up of three displays. It’ll be capable of augmenting sat-nav directions onto an image of the road ahead and can be controlled by Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX voice activation system – one of the best in our experience.

Along with the smart finishes and class-leading infotainment, you’ll find the EQS is also extremely practical. It’ll have room to carry five adults comfortably, with massage, cooled and heated seats on the options list. The boot, meanwhile, will be big enough to get lost in.

Mercedes is sure to be toying with the idea of making the EQS a seven-seater – a handy feature offered by the new Range Rover. Removing the Maybach version’s bulky rear captain seats would free up the room needed for a third row.

With up to seven people aboard, the EQS is going to need serious power to deliver the effortless performance expected of a premium SUV. It will have an electric motor on the front and the rear axle – in the Mercedes EQS 580 4MATIC saloon – that’s enough to produce 523PS combined. That would give the EQS SUV acceleration of 0-62mph in less than five seconds and a range of around 350 miles.

Mercedes-Benz EQC Review 2022 front right exterior

Can't wait for the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV EV? You need a Mercedes-Benz EQC...

Electric Mercedes-Benz SUVs are not a new idea – the Mercedes-Benz EQC set the precedent when it was launched back in 2019 – introducing the Mercedes EQ electric brand in the process. The EQC should be at the top of your list if you’re in the market for a posh electric SUV thanks to its effortless performance and decent practicality. Around £50,000 gets you a 2020 car with less than 15,000 miles on the clock.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS is Mercedes’ flagship electric saloon, but there will be an SUV version, imaginatively called the EQS SUV.

Yes, the Mercedes-Benz EQE has already been revealed – it’s an electric saloon that’s the same size as the E-Class.

Audi’s electric range includes the Q4 e-tron, e-tron SUV and e-tron GT saloon.
