Nowadays vans come in petrol, diesel, hybrid and even electric form. You can also get vans with everything from two seats to over ten if you need a minibus. Why not check out what used vans are for sale on heycar?

Why buy a used van?

You don’t buy a used van because you’re looking for luxury, speed or style. A van is usually a very rational purchase, bought simply because you need something practical to carry lots of stuff. But there’s a wide range of customers for used vans: usually tradespeople who need it for their job, or delivery drivers that ferry items to and from customers. However a number of owners buy them for leisure. There are vans with rear seats for families who need to transport lots of luggage or sports equipment such as bikes, for example. A good used van has plenty of customers and uses.

What types of used vans for sale are there?

There is a huge variety of used vans for sale from lots of different brands, with small vans and large vans offered. One of our favourites is the Ford Transit range - an icon of the commercial vehicle world for several decades. You can get small Ford Transits and very large ones. Recently you’ve been able to buy a hybrid Ford Transit too, with an electric one on the way. Other examples of our favourite used vans for sale include the Volkswagen Caddy and Volkswagen Transporter, the Mercedes Vito and Mercedes Sprinter, the Vauxhall Vivaro and the Citroen Berlingo

Find a ULEZ compliant used van for sale

One of the biggest considerations for a lot of van buyers now is if it's ULEZ compliant. You'll find a wide range of diesel vans for sale and the good news that the newest diesel engines do comply to the strict emission regulations currently in place. It's worth checking when looking at a diesel used van for sale, but if it was made after 2016 it should be Euro 6 compliant and therefore be ULEZ compliant.

Don't worry though if you don't want to buy a used diesel van, as there are a growing number of alternatives out there if you're looking for a ULEZ compliant used van for sale. You'll find a good range of petrol vans for sale and there's also a small number of hybrid vans for sale available, but as many manufacturers are focusing their attention on EVs, you should find a decent range of used electric vans for sale

Can I drive a 3.5 tonne van on a standard car licence?

Need to know if you can drive a 3.5 tonne van? It can be difficult to know what types of vehicle your licence allows you to drive these days. The good news is that you don’t need a special licence to drive the majority of conventional vans.

That said, your age, the date you passed your test and the exact weight of the vehicle, among other factors, can all have an effect on whether you’re legally allowed behind the wheel. If you're looking to get a van for your business or need to hire a van to move some stuff, here's what you need to know.

The good news is that if you have a full UK driving licence (category B) entitles you to drive conventional, rigid-axle vans or pick-ups that weigh up to 3.5 tonnes and have up to eight passenger seats. In short, that means you can drive most normal, light vans with a car licence.

In 2017 the Government increased the weight limit for electric vans. Taking into account the added weight of electric or hybrid-electric drivetrains, the rule change increased the maximum permissible mass for a Category B licence holder – that of someone who holds a standard car licence – from the current limit of 3500kg up to 4250kg.

Electric vans in particular are generally heavier than diesels because of the large battery required to store the electric charge. This reduces the amount of goods they can carry, or it means that van drivers have to apply for a category C licence with the associated costs and medical report requirements.

Can I drive a 7.5 tonne van on a standard car licence?

If you passed your test before January 1997 then you may automatically be able to drive larger, heavier vehicles weighing up to 7.5 tonnes (the back of your driving licence will tell you for sure). Anyone who passed their driving test after that date needs to pass an additional test in order to drive vehicles heavier than 3.5 tonnes.

Do different types of vans need different driving licences?

You need a different licence to drive heavier vehicles. A category C1 licence allows the holder to drive vehicles that weigh between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, while a category C1 E covers vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes with a trailer over 750kg and combined weight of up to 12,000kg. You might also need to fit a tachograph if the vehicle weighs over 3.5 tonnes when fully laden or towing a trailer.

What should I look for when buying a used van?

If you’re looking to buy or lease a used van you will need to make sure it’s fit for purpose. This means it needs to be capable of the tasks you need it to handle. Bear in mind a small van is agile around town, more efficient and easier to park, but has limits in terms of the amount and weight of things it can carry. At the other end of the scale large vans carry a huge amount of stuff, but cost more to buy and run, while the tallest vans will bring problems with height restrictions in car parks or other areas. You also need to consider whether a hugely popular diesel van is what you want, or whether petrol, hybrid or electric vans offer a better solution.
