Convertible cars have always been aspirational but you no longer need to break the bank to get a luxury open-top car. Convertibles, also known as cabriolets or open-top cars, are cars that have removable or folding roofs. They come in all sizes and price points, and are great for getting the wind in your hair and enjoying good weather. There’s a used convertible car for sale for every need, from small two-seat sports cars to four-seat convertibles, and more expensive luxury convertibles. Why buy a used convertible car?

Despite unpredictable summers, British car buyers continue to love a convertible - indeed the UK is one of the biggest markets in Europe for open-top cars. And it's easy to see why. Ever been stuck in traffic on a hot day and wished you were sunbathing instead? That’s why people buy convertible cars. Having a folding roof allows you to enjoy the weather and experience the sights and sounds while at the wheel, but most convertibles have easy folding electric roofs which secure a roof over your head in seconds if it starts to rain. Convertible sports cars offer an engaging driving experience and give you more engine noise, while folding hardtop convertibles give you the security and refinement of a solid coupe roof.

What are the best makes and models of convertibles?

Small convertibles such as the stylish MINI Convertible and hugely fun Mazda MX-5 are great ways to get roofless motoring at a cheap price. The Porsche 718 Boxster and Jaguar F-Type Convertible are pricer but faster and more exciting sports cars. If you must have a four-seat convertible, check out the BMW 2 Series Convertible, or if you need more space and luxury there’s the Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet. The Range Rover Evoque Convertible also offers a unique take on the SUV.

What should I look for when buying a used convertible car?

Different types of convertibles have positives and negatives. Many four-seat convertibles don’t have enough space in the back for adults due to the roof, while folding metal hardtops are complex and expensive to fix if they go wrong. Two seat convertibles are fun but often a lot less practical than the coupe version, too. It’s important to check the operation of the electric roof and that it opens and closes smoothly, as fixing a broken roof can be very expensive. Supercars in convertible form (such as the Audi R8 Spyder) are sometimes cramped even for just the driver, too.

If you're not sure if a used convertible car is quite right for you, we've got 1000s of used cars for sale to suit all budgets and needs.
