2022 SsangYong Musso pick-up: price, specs, release date
SsangYong has given its SsangYong Musso pick-up a dashing new look.
It's a level of desirability that was absent in the generic-looking old SsangYong Musso model.
2022 SsangYong Musso styling
The new SsangYong Musso has been given a grille you'd expect to find on an American pick-up, which might not be to everyone's tastes but is at least memorable. All models get alloy wheels – so they look smarter than a steel-wheeled basic Ford Ranger – and all but the basic model get side steps and snazzy decals.
2022 SsangYong Musso engine and gearbox
The 2022 SsangYong Musso keeps SsangYong's tried-and-tested 182PS 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, which you can have with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox. It's no rocket ship – 0-62mph takes 11.3 seconds in the manual and 11.9 seconds in the auto – but in automatic guise it can carry a 1.0-tonne payload while hauling a 3.5-tonne trailer. Fuel economy of up to 29.5mpg is possible.
Confirming the SsangYong Musso's working credentials is its body-on-ladder chassis that, according to SsangYong, is made from tougher steel than competitors use. It is based on the SsangYong Rexton. Four-wheel drive, with high and low gears, is also standard as is hill-hold assist and hill descent assist. Slippy site entrances should fall well within its capabilities.
2022 SsangYong Musso trim levels
The SsangYong Musso comes in four trim levels – the EX, Rebel, Saracen and the SsangYong Musso Rhino.
SsangYong Musso EX models get all the kit you need, including 17-inch alloy wheels, electric windows, DAB radio, cruise control, central locking, air-con, auto lights and auto wipers.
It's worth upgrading to SsangYong Musso Rebel trim, which adds a proper eight-inch infotainment screen that has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – so you can use your phone's apps on the car's big screen – and a reversing camera. You also get front seats that are heated and ventilated, leather-look upholstery and a heated steering wheel. Rebel models look sharper on the outside thanks to their side steps and 'Rebel' decals.
SsangYong Musso Saracen models are surprisingly posh inside. They have Nappa leather upholstery and front seats that are electrically adjustable, heated and cooled. Even the back seats are heated. You also get climate control, plus front and rear parking sensors, and an infotainment upgrade, with a larger 9.2-inch screen and built-in TomTom sat-nav.
Additional safety kit includes blind-spot detection, lane-change assist, rear-cross-traffic alert and powerful projector headlights. Distinctive looks come thanks to tinted windows, 18-inch wheel and 'Saracen' decals.
SsangYong Musso Rhino models get an extended load bay, which is 310mm longer than the beds in the rest of the range, and 'Rhino' decals. They get 17-inch wheels with chunky tyres and come as standard with an automatic gearbox.

With a revised SsangYong Musso on sale, now's the perfect time to get a great deal on an older model.
Less than £15,000 is enough to get you behind the wheel of a 2018 model with more than three years left on its warranty and 50,000 miles on the clock. We'd spend a bit more though – £22,000 is enough to get you a 2018 mid-range Rebel model with a little over 20,000 miles on its odometer.
The SsangYong Musso's body-on-frame design – shared with the SsangYong Rexton SUV – has a tough construction that's ideal for towing and off-road driving.
The SsangYong Musso has a 2.2-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine that produces 182PS and 420Nm of torque.
While there's not a huge amount of information available on the SsangYong Musso's reliability, its class-leading seven-year 150,000-mile warranty should go a long way to reassure you of its durability.
